The anime is jointly produced by, and, the same studios that co-produced the 2011–2012 anime adaptation for. It is also directed by Takahiro Miura, with music composed by; character designs by Tomonori Sudou, Hisayuki Tabata, and Atsushi Ikariya, based on the original designs by; and art, 3D, and photography directions by Koji Eto, Kōjirō Shishido, and Yuichi Terao, respectively. The first half of the series ran from October 4 to December 27, 2014. The second half ran from April 4 to June 27, 2015. An advanced screening online premiered on September 28, 2014, in several countries across the world, including Japan, the United States, France, Germany, Italy and South Korea. Has acquired streaming and home video rights to the 2014 series for North America. They released an English dub of the first half of the series on DVD and limited on August 25, 2015.

A ten-minute episode was featured on the Blu-ray release of the second half of the series, which was released on October 7, 2015; the episode was based on an alternate ending from the visual novel, titled Sunny Day. The first opening theme is 'Ideal White' by and the first ending theme is 'Believe'. A cover version of 'This Illusion' from the original visual novel was used as the ending theme for episode 12, performed. The second opening theme is 'Brave Shine' by and the second ending theme is 'Ring Your Bell' by Kalafina. A remix of 'Ring Your Bell', titled 'Ring Your Bell (in the silence)', was used as the ending theme for episode 15. The song 'Last Stardust', performed by Aimer, was used as an insert song for episode 20.

The Holy Grail War is a battle royale among seven magi who serve as Masters. Masters, through the use of the command seals they are given when they enter the war, command Heroic Spirits known as Servants to fight for them in battle. In the Fifth Holy Grail War, Rin Toosaka is among the magi entering the competition. With her Servant, Archer, she hopes to obtain the ultimate prize—the Holy Grail, a magical artifact capable of granting its wielder any wish.

One of Rin’s classmates, Emiya Shirou, accidentally enters the competition and ends up commanding a Servant of his own known as Saber. As they find themselves facing mutual enemies, Rin and Shirou decide to form a temporary alliance as they challenge their opponents in the Holy Grail War.
