The only relief from the all-black design of the XD3 set is the red ring around the volume control. We liked the elegant Rockus speaker set, which has unusual-looking cylindrical satellites and impactful sound, for their interesting driver design and tall, moderate-footprint subwoofer. We were even on the verge of anointing the Rockus with our Top 100 award for. Then came a new offering from a well-known audio name, from which we've never had occasion to review computer-specific gear before: Cerwin-Vega. Cerwin-Vega (or, as the company puts it, 'Cerwin-Vega! The LOUD Speaker Company') is well known in premium consumer-audio-component circles, as well as for car audio.

But this was the first computer-centric speaker set that we've seen from the company. (Cerwin-Vega tells us that it's available exclusively from Best Buy in the U.S.; it's also available in other geographies.) To put it charitably, most under-$100 computer speakers we've tested over the years have been largely outclassed by even midpriced bookshelf twins running at a moderate volume level. That includes not just the usual terrible bundled pipsqueaks that come with desktop PCs (when a desktop maker even bothers bundling speakers at all, anymore), but most PC-specific aftermarket speaker sets under $100 (and some above, too). So why not forego 'made for computer' speakers entirely?

The problem, of course, is size and power. Component-audio speakers need amplification. Even if you have an amp between your speakers and your PC, the most compact bookshelf speakers are a major space hog on your typical computer desk, especially bracketing a trim 22- or 23-inch LCD monitor. That's why we were intrigued by the Cerwin-Vega XD3 Powered Desktop Speakers. They're fairly compact, yet their maker promised full, bassy sound without a subwoofer or an amp.

And we have to give the XD3 the nod—or more appropriately, a brisk headbang. These are at least the equal of the trio we matched them up against, and for the price and size, the top PC-specific speakers we've heard in th last couple of years. They're a great choice for general-purpose desktop use, music playback, and gaming where positional sound isn't a primary need—but we have one crucial caveat about them that will only play out over the long term.
